Antique Etching- Artist Ernest C Rost

Antique Etching- Artist Ernest C Rost 1867-1940
Titled: Long Island Farm
Measures framed: 32.25 x 17.5 inches

Ernest Rost, an artist active in the 1880s, began with oil landscapes showcased at the National Academy of Design in NYC, earning awards. His Tonalist style resembled impressionism, featuring atmospheric landscapes with warm tones. Studying in Europe and the Barbizon school, he had studios in NYC and Arkville, later destroyed by fire.
From 1887, Rost transitioned to etching, making it his main focus by 1890. His etchings were praised for naturalistic composition, detail, and assured lines. Most were created between 1890 and 1896, depicting rural New York and nearby areas. Some works included people, animals, and homes of notable writers and statesmen. Etchings continued until at least 1903.
