Charles Volkmar was a 19th-century American artist known for his skills in painting, etching, and ceramics. He learned art at the Maryland Institute and began creating etchings before turning twenty. Accused of supporting the Confederacy, he went to Paris in 1861, studying sculpting under Antoine-Louis Bayre and painting under Henri Harpignies. He lived in Paris for 15 years, exhibiting at the Paris Salon from 1875 to 1880.
Volkmar also became fascinated with underglaze slip painting pottery during this time. He established kilns in several locations upon returning to the US - Greenpoint, the Bronx, Menlo Park, and Metuchen. His ceramics business thrived until his retirement due to poor health in 1911.
Throughout his career, Volkmar showcased his work at various institutions including the National Academy of Design, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and the Smithsonian Museum of American Art. His etching was featured in an important exhibition of American art in Boston in 1883. The exhibition catalog highlighted over 700 original artworks, and Volkmar's etching was particularly notable for its strong print quality and tonal values.
