Original Victorian Royal Navy Continuous Service Certificate – Benjamin Oldroyde
An original Royal Navy Continuous Service Certificate issued to Benjamin Oldroyde (Official Number 90097), born 19 October 1858 at Warmfield, Yorkshire. The certificate records his enlistment on 13 October 1875, physical description, trade (Fitter), conduct entries, qualifications, and service aboard several Royal Navy vessels, including HMS Endymion, HMS St Vincent, HMS Invincible, HMS Indus, HMS Bellerophon, HMS Encounter, HMS Pembroke, and HMS Lord Warden.

Also included is a copy of the corresponding National Archives Admiralty record (ADM 188/96/90097). Comparison of the original certificate with the archival copy shows that the original preserves handwritten details no longer visible in the National Archives image, making the two documents complementary for research purposes.

The certificate survived for approximately 150 years rolled inside its original canvas-covered wooden storage peg, an unusual survival that contributed to its preservation.
